I just finished killing Diablo tonight and am happy to be able to play Diablo I again. I haven't tested with Vista but it might work using this same technique. Colors are correct with no sparklies and all sounds work. When the game starts both my displays switch to 640x480. Then under settings choose "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640x480".

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)".
What I did was right click diablo.exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab.

As you know, getting older games working on Windows 7 can be a right pain in the ass, but it can be done with some perseverance. With Diablo 3 just weeks away from release, many of you may be taking a trip down memory lane prior to launch and revisiting the original Diablo.
My system has the standard DirectX version for Win7. Getting Diablo 1 Working on Windows 7 Guide.

The default Microsoft video drivers did not provide correct colors. I got it working with the latest Nvidia drivers v197. At first the graphics were sparkly and it had only music but no other sounds. v1.09 works too.Īfter a lot of effort, I also have it running normally on Windows 7 64bit. It will usually crash with dual screens configured, but it runs with single screen. I can report success with Diablo I v1.07 running fine on WinXP SP3 32bit on a dual-core Xeon. In preparation for the eventual release of Diablo III, I dug out my old Diablo I disc and started playing it earlier this month. Note: This might also work for other games that have this problem. Make sure you put the correct paths for diablo.exe and explorer.exe (Note: I tried doing it without the PAUSE command and explorer was restarted right as diablo was starting, and therefore the fix does not work.) You will need to press spacebar on the little window after quitting diablo. tskill doesn't work right.Ĭopy and paste the above into a notepad file and save it as diablo.bat (Save as type should be set to All Files) Then, whenever you want to play diablo, just use this file. Oh, the reason I'm using process.exe instead of windows' tskill command (win xp home) or taskkill (win xp pro) is because A. Solution was to create a batch file that kills explorer (temporarily) while playing diablo. I was looking up diablo and found a facepunch thread where someone suggested that it was explorer.exe in windows xp that was causing the problem (something to do with how windows looks?) and a solution. I know, it's a pretty crazy fix, but it works for me. Well, you put this into a batch file, and kill explorer.exe for diablo 1 to work properly. I found this executable called Process.exe which allows you to kill a program from command line.
Also, this solution does not work for in-game movies.DISCLAIMER: You do this at your own risk, so don't blame me if it doesn't work, or screws up the computer.

Note: The above registry work only with the mod Diablo Awakening, so it will not work with other Diablo versions. If you play Diablo 1 on Win 7 and you have blunt colours or multicoloured pixels, it can be fixed with a registry entry.ĭownload the file and double click on it and accept the entry. The solution below is the official solution for problem with washed out or rainbow colors in the game. The colour problem causes the pixels in the game to display wrongly, making the graphics unreadable sometimes.
The most popular one is displaying wrong colours in Diablo 1 when using Windows 7. These games were working fine on systems like Windows 98 or Windows XP, but unfortunately there are problems on newer systems. Windows 7 users often moan about compatibility issues for older games like Diablo 1.
